STORYLINE:
Argentine President Javier Milei launched his new national political party, La Libertad Avanza, at a massive public rally on Saturday, as he reflected on the unlikely journey that brought him to power.

He hopes to gain greater representation in Congress, where he currently holds a minority position.

At an event organized in Parque Lezama, a location where he had held several rallies during his political beginnings, a large gathering took place, starting with rock music.

Milei arrived on stage like a true musical star, making his way through the crowd that reached out to touch him.

He recounted his improbable political history leading to the presidency, framing it as a struggle between David and Goliath, strongly criticized the press, and boasted about making history in the country’s economy, even as 52.9% of Argentinians live in poverty—the highest rate recorded since 2003.

The figure revealed on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) showed a deterioration of social indicators by 11.2% points compared to the second half of 2023, when 41.7% of the population was poor.

Meanwhile, extreme poverty affects 18.1% of citizens, up from 11.9% in the last semester.

Additionally, during the first half of this year, 66.1% of children under 14 lived in poor households.

Milei stated that poverty is decreasing in the country, despite the concerning recent data published on Thursday.

He claimed that this situation was created by previous governments.

He also added that change will not happen overnight, but that the issue is being actively addressed.

With bureaucratic processes allowing La Libertad Avanza to expand into other provinces and achieve better national presence, Milei hopes they can secure greater representation in Congress.
