STORYLINE:
A total of 1,030 people – including 156 women and 87 children – have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon in less than two weeks, the country’s health minister said Saturday, a higher death toll than in the 11 months before that.

The number approaches the estimated death toll of the bruising monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006.

From Oct. 8 – when Hezbollah began firing rockets over the border into Israel in support of its ally, Hamas – to September 15th, 610 people were killed, including 38 women and 17 children, Health Minister Firas Abiad told journalists.

That brings the total killed since Oct. 8 to 1,640, including 104 children and 194 women.

The health ministry counted 11 people killed and 108 wounded on Friday, but officials gave the caveat that the number included only those who reached hospitals, implying that others may be uncounted.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed on Saturday that its leader and one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day.

Israel’s Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, said Saturday that the elimination of Nasrallah was “not the end of our toolbox,” indicating that more strikes were planned.

Israel has vowed to step up pressure on Hezbollah until it halts its attacks that have displaced tens of thousands of Israelis from communities near the Lebanese border.

The recent fighting has also displaced more than 200,000 Lebanese in the past week, according to the United Nations.
