“Alain is a bit of a legend. He’s twice my age. So when I started climbing, I’d heard about Alain and that he did free solos. But soloing was really foreign to me. It’s scary, a bit.”

STORYLINE:
Alain Robert, a famous free climber also known as “French Spiderman” scaled a skyscraper on Saturday in the business district of La Défense in Paris.
It took more than an hour for Robert to make his way up the 187-meter Total tower, a building he already climbed a dozen times.
Since the 1990s, the now 62-year-old made a reputation out of his many urban stunts, conducted without rope or any belay equipment.
“That’s what I call my life path”, he said to journalists. “They say passion is ephemeral. I don’t think it’s passion. I need it, that’s all,” he added.
Among his most famous free-solo ascents are the Eiffel Tower (1996), Taipei 101 in Taiwan (2004), the) and Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (1997, 2007, 2009).
This time, he was joined by Sébastien Bouin, 31. The French top rock climber said it was his first free building climb.
“Alain is a bit of a legend”, he said. “He’s twice my age so when I started climbing, I’d heard about Alain and that he did free solos. But soloing was really foreign to me. It’s scary, a bit,” he added.
After reaching the top, both climbers were briefly arrested by the police before being quickly released.
