“I heard him (Trump) saying that there will be no aid for Ukraine. The interesting question is whether Europe would be able to push him into changing his mind on this matter. If they can, it would be just unbelievable. The U.S. makes a big contribution right now and helps us a lot, so it would be great of Trump to continue this – if he wins, of course.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) "Sheva" (call sign), serviceman of 56th Brigade:
“It surprises me that the U.S. with its biggest military budget is afraid to supply us with weapons. They also create jobs while producing ammunition and expanding production. Nevertheless, I think it’s easier to supply us and give us an ability to fight instead of sending American soldiers, like in Afghanistan and elsewhere. How much aid the U.S. provided for Afghanistan and how quickly did they loose when Taliban took over? People there didn’t want to fight for their country. Here, it is already going on for three years and we are still standing. Yes, we have a big shortage of supplies, people and other resources, but still it is important to support us.”

“Also, Trump speculates with such things as millions of dead people and everything destroyed (in Ukraine) without even coming here, I think it’s a speculation. And those will damage both us and you. The only thing that Russia understands is force, it’s always been like that. They once tried to make concessions to Hitler by giving the Czech Republic and Silesia. Did that stop him? No way.”

STORYLINE:
Ukrainian soldiers reacted Friday to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump, with tensions rising between the two over U.S. military aid to Ukraine.
While Zelenskyy met Trump, Ukraine’s 56th brigade were fighting in the eastern Chasiv Yar area, firing heavy artillery at Russian positions.
The brigade’s battery commander, known by his call sign "Achilles", said he wondered whether European leaders could convince Trump to continue providing aid were he to win the presidency.
"The U.S. makes a big contribution right now and helps us a lot, so it would be great of Trump to continue this – if he wins, of course,” he said.
The meeting came at a critical time in the Russia-Ukraine war as election day nears in the U.S.
Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, have taken sharply different approaches to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy has been eager to keep good relations with the United States, his country’s largest provider of arms and money for the war.
But the future of that support would be in doubt if Trump is to win the election.
