“Well, the concept itself existed since the ’80s, and it’s just the idea of getting together outdoor in a public space and enjoying dinner impromptu, alfresco, but starting it off in New York was really like just a deep desire to do something and probably one of the biggest, best, hardest cities to do something in around the world. And it was proof of concept. It was proof that people loved it. It was, well, welcomed and then, yeah, allowed us to grow globally.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sandy Safi, President of Le Diner En Blanc:
“So people meet at gathering points across the entire city of New York, and then they’re guided through subway or pedestrian routes to a secret location. It’s here. It happens to be Union Square. And then they assemble with their tables, their chairs dressed in white to a theme. This year, the theme is masquerade. So you’ll be seeing a lot of white masks and beautiful decor that fits the masquerade era. Just it’s an opportunity to let themselves go, to dress up, to have fun, to do something out of the ordinary and enjoy a meal with friends.”

And we have two real cakes as our dessert. And this (unclear) in our blog and this is our table second. And we just love sustainability. We love costuming. And so that’s why we did this.”

STORYLINE:
Union Square transformed into a sea of white as approximately three-thousand elegantly dressed diners gathered for the annual Le Dîner en Blanc.
Each guest arrived prepared for a sophisticated soirée, bringing along gourmet picnic fare, fine china, silverware, tablecloths, and folding tables and chairs.
Le Dîner en Blanc International’s Co-Founder and President Sandy Safi spoke about the secret event.
“The concept itself existed since the ’80s, and it’s just the idea of getting together outdoor in a public space and enjoying dinner impromptu, alfresco, but starting it off in New York was really like just a deep desire to do something and probably one of the biggest, best, hardest cities to do something in around the world,” Safi said.
The surprise secret venue was revealed at the very last minute.
