STORYLINE:
China on Friday reasserted its claim over the disputed border areas with India in South Tibet after a group of Indian mountain climbers named a peak in the area after the 6th Dalai Lama.
A group of 15 Indian mountaineers decided to name the previously unclimbed and unnamed summit in Arunachal Pradesh as “Tsangyang Gyatso Peak," the 6th Dalai Lama who is also well known for his poems and songs, according to Indian media reports.
Referring to the region in its Chinese name “Zangnan,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said “it’s illegal, and null and void for India to set up the so-called Arunachal Pradesh in Chinese territory” when asked about the naming at a daily news conference.
Asked about the election of former Defense Minister Ishiba Shigeru as the new president of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Lin refused to comment because it’s Japan’s “internal affairs.”
China hoped the Japanese government would “establish an objective and correct understanding of China, pursue a positive and rational policy towards China, and work with us to jointly promote the sustainable and stable development of China-Japan relations along the right track,” he added.
“China is always firmly opposed to Japanese politicians visiting China’s Taiwan region,” Lin reiterated when commenting on Ishiba’s visit to Taiwan in late July.
The election of Shigeru as LDP leader sets him up to become Japan’s prime minister next week.
Separately, Lin urged the warring parties in Myanmar to engage in talks after the country’s junta reportedly invited armed rebel groups to stop fighting and resume talks.
China hoped that “relevant parties in Myanmar will end the fighting and start peace talks, properly resolve differences through dialogue within the constitutional framework, and restart the process of democratic transformation,” Lin said.
