STORYLINE:
Pope Francis departed Thursday for a four-day trip to Luxembourg and Belgium to visit dwindling Catholic communities, political leaders and royalty and to celebrate venerable universities.
On the plane heading to Luxembourg, the Pope joked that he was not up for the trip down the aisle to greet reporters.
“I do not feel up to the trip,” he smiled, pointing to the aisle with his hand, “I greet you from here.”
This European trip for the 87-year-old pontiff comes just after a demanding nearly two-week-long trip to Asia.
He thanked the 64-member press corps aboard the papal plane, before returning to the front of the aircraft.
Earlier in the week, the Pope canceled his audience due to a slight flu, but he seemed back to good health in time for his Wednesday weekly audience.
