1. Various of fire and smoke rising from central penitentiary Regina Coeli UPSOUND (Italian): "Freedom, freedom"
STORYLINE:
Smoke billowed from a part of the Regina Coeli prison in central Rome on Wednesday amid local media reports that some inmates set fires in protest at overcrowding at the penitentiary.
From the nearby Gianicolo hill, flames could be seen lighting up the night sky and prisoners could be heard shouting "Freedom, freedom."
The prison was built for 626 inmates, but houses 1,170, according to the penitentiary police union UILPA.
Overcrowding and understaffing are a chronic problem in the Italian prison system and protests erupted at a number of jails over the summer.
