"Life has a way of leading us to moments we couldn’t have foreseen. But today I stand not just as a son, but as a fellow police officer. Though I now serve as a police officer back in Australia, the meaning of this job and the friendships formed are the same no matter where we complete our service. The unique bond shared by colleagues in this line of work is like any other. We face dangers, challenges and stresses that few outside the force can truly understand. And it’s those friendships that become the foundation of why we continue to do what we do. This stone with its double sided design reflects that duality. To the public, one side stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made in their service. But for the officers driving into and out of this place, it’s a personal reminder of the risk that we are faced with and the camaraderie that sustains us."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Su Bushby, Matt Ratana’s partner:
"As Matt’s partner, we shared so many wonderful times together. But sadly, our future was cut short as he was taken from me far too soon. To lose a loved one as I did, is a deeply challenging and emotional experience. But I treasure the happy memories we share together. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. So may this stone act as a permanent reminder of Matt’s life and the service to this country, he will never be forgotten."

STORYLINE:
A memorial stone was unveiled on Wednesday to commemorate a British police officer who was killed in 2020.
New Zealand-born Sgt. Matiu Ratana, who was known as Matt, was shot and murdered in September 2020 at Croydon Custody Center in south London by Louis De Zoysa.
The officer’s partner Su Bushby and son Luke Ratana were among those attending the ceremony along with his colleagues and friends.
"May this stone act as a permanent reminder of Matt’s life and the service to this country," said Bushby.
The Haka was performed by members of the London Maori Club in honour of Ratana’s New Zealand heritage.
Ratana was a keen rugby player who had been a police officer for 30 years and was three months from retirement when he was killed.
