12. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
“If you are over 75 years of age, you should get an RSV vaccine. Notably, that is not a vaccine that you get every year. It is one that – you get it once, you’re good to go for now. Data may change, but over 75, get the shot for RSV. If you are in the 60 to 74 range and you have some risk factors, heart disease, lung disease, if you live in a nursing home, it is pretty straightforward. You should also get that vaccine.”

“Additionally, the RSV vaccine has another group of people who could benefit, and those are folks who are pregnant in their 32nd to 36th week of gestation. This is not about protecting the person who’s pregnant. It’s about the fact that you create antibodies. Those antibodies cross the placenta and then that newborn is born with a borrowed immune system from mom so they can protect themselves from RSV.”

“So if you got COVID over the summer, really, the decision to get the vaccine is a bit in your hands. Most people would recommend waiting 2 to 3 months after you had your COVID-related illness. But if for some reason that doesn’t work for you, it’s okay to get the COVID shot.”
