“The Chelsea Hotel far from New York’s most glamorous place, had built a reputation for reasons I don’t know, dating back 100 years, of allowing free thought, encouraging free thought. It was a hotel that was residential. You didn’t just come for a weekend, just you lived here, and it just grew and grew as a place to be for the latest happenings, whether it was in music and theater and motion pictures and writing.”
