“We have had the emergence of new drugs. We have had some interest in bariatric surgery for a few decades now as another way to possibly reduce severe obesity. But so far, it’s it’s very, very hard to shift, including with the with the new with the new drugs. And many of them are showing some really important other health consequences. So I think we’re still in the very early stages of knowing how that will be helpful to people with obesity.”

“In large part, what this is driven by what happens earlier in life. So obesity developing early, early in life will continue to stack up as as people age. So our main strategy, I think, right now is can we prevent obesity in children? Can we delay obesity in children? Right. Even even delays for a few years will be really important if we if we think about health and about and about the level of of obesity that’s that’s initially eventually reached at the population level.”

STORYLINE:
Obesity is high and holding steady in the U.S. but the proportion of those with severe obesity _ especially women _ has climbed since a decade ago, according to new government research.
The U.S. obesity rate is about 40%, according to a 2021-2023 survey of about 6,000 people. Nearly 1 in 10 of those surveyed reported severe obesity, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found. Women were nearly twice as likely as men to report severe obesity.
The overall obesity rate appeared to tick down vs. the 2017-2020 survey, but the change wasn’t considered statistically significant; the numbers are small enough that there’s mathematical chance they didn’t truly decline.
“We simply can’t see down to that detailed level to prescription medication use and compare that to changes in obesity prevalence,” Emmerich said. “Hopefully that is something we can see in the future.”
