“A report that’s being released is showing us that obesity in the U.S. continues to affect almost half of the of the U.S. population of adults. It’s particularly affecting people from lower education levels. We are seeing continued levels of obesity quite similar to what we’ve been seeing over the past ten years.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Solveig Cunningham , Emory University:
“We have had the emergence of new drugs. We have had some interest in bariatric surgery for a few decades now as another way to possibly reduce severe obesity. But so far, it’s it’s very, very hard to shift, including with the with the new with the new drugs. And many of them are showing some really important other health consequences. So I think we’re still in the very early stages of knowing how that will be helpful to people with obesity.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Solveig Cunningham, Emory University:
“In large part, what this is driven by what happens earlier in life. So obesity developing early, early in life will continue to stack up as as people age. So our main strategy, I think, right now is can we prevent obesity in children? Can we delay obesity in children? Right. Even even delays for a few years will be really important if we if we think about health and about and about the level of of obesity that’s that’s initially eventually reached at the population level.”

STORYLINE:
Obesity is holding steady in the U.S., affecting about 4 in 10 Americans overall, but the proportion of those with severe obesity _ especially women _ is climbing, according to new government research.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released findings Tuesday from a 2021-2023 health survey that calculates obesity prevalence based on a measure of height and weight. It included about 6,000 people.
The latest survey found that the U.S. obesity rate was about 40%, down from about 42% recorded in 2017-2020 study. More than 9% _ or nearly 1 in 10 _ of those surveyed reported severe obesity, slightly higher than the previous study. Women were nearly twice as likely as men to report severe obesity, the survey found.
“Sometimes, when you look at all that red, it’s really discouraging," Goodman said.
