STORYLINE:
Iran on Tuesday expressed concern over Israeli strikes against Lebanon.
Fatemeh Mohajerani, spokesperson for the Iranian government, said Iran strongly condemns the attacks and demands immediate intervention by the U.N. Security Council.
"We are concerned about the repetition of disasters like those that happened in Gaza and Rafah, and therefore, we demand immediate intervention by the U.N Security Council," she said during a briefing in Tehran.
Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah traded strikes again Tuesday, a day after a massive Israeli bombardment killed nearly 500 people, sent thousands fleeing from southern Lebanon and put the two sides on the brink of all-out war.
The renewed exchange came after Monday’s historic barrages racked up the highest death toll in any single day in Lebanon since Israel and Hezbollah fought a bruising monthlong war in 2006.
Hezbollah said it launched missiles overnight at eight sites in Israel, including an explosives factory in Zichron, 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the border.
Mohajerani also said efforts were ongoing to start new talks over Iran’s nuclear program and the U.S. sanctions that have hit Iran’s economy hard.
"As the foreign minister said, measures are being taken to start the talks."
