1. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland Democratic Senate Candidate:
“The stakes of this election. I think about my 19-year-old daughter who’s in college. She’s a sophomore, and she literally has fewer rights in this moment than her grandmother and mother. So, when we think about reproductive freedom for our daughters, not just abortion care, but think about contraception and IVF and the efforts really to roll back the rights of women. We also think about gun violence, which has become, I think, a really sad story in America, which is that the number one way that children die is through gun violence. So having sensible gun legislation that helps us to keep our kids safe is one of the issues that’s at stake in this election and also how we handle the economy."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland Democratic Senate Candidate:
"You know, I think my opponent’s record is very clear where abortion care is concerned, as you’ve mentioned. Just two years ago, which was very recent, he vetoed important abortion care legislation in the state of Maryland. And when he was overridden, he withheld the funding to train abortion care providers in the state until Governor Moore came into office."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland Democratic Senate Candidate:
“You know, I think Marylanders get it. I think they certainly understand what having the majority in the Senate means. They recognize that quite literally, and this is something that Senator Cardin often says. he says, you know, I’ve been in the Senate when we were in the minority and I’ve been in the Senate when we’ve been in the majority, and it is it is absolutely the case that whoever is in the majority controls the agenda.”

STORYLINE:
Democrat Angela Alsobrooks is prioritizing abortion rights in a key U.S. Senate race in Maryland against Republican Larry Hogan.

It’s a race that could determine control of the chamber.

“The stakes of this election. I think about my 19-year-old daughter who’s in college. She’s a sophomore, and she literally has fewer rights in this moment than her grandmother and mother. So, when we think about reproductive freedom for our daughters, not just abortion care, but think about contraception and IVF and the efforts really to roll back the rights of women,” Alsobrooks said in an interview with The Associated Press

Alsobrooks is focusing on the former governor’s veto of a bill in Maryland in 2022 to expand abortion access by ending a restriction that only physicians provide abortions.

Democrats overrode Hogan’s veto, but Alsobrooks says it’s a clear sign Hogan won’t support abortion rights.

“I think my opponent’s record is very clear where abortion care is concerned, as you’ve mentioned. Just two years ago, which was very recent, he vetoed important abortion care legislation in the state of Maryland. And when he was overridden, he withheld the funding to train abortion care providers in the state until Governor Moore came into office,” Alsobrooks said.

Hogan is personally opposed to abortion, but he says he supports abortion rights.

He has said he would not support a federal abortion ban, and he says he would cosponsor a bill to codify Roe v. Wade.
