STORYLINE:
China on Monday extends “sincere congratulations” to Sri Lankan Marxist lawmaker Anura Kumara Dissanayake for winning the presidential election.
Dissanayake, 55, who ran as head of the Marxist-leaning National People’s Power coalition, defeated President Ranil Wickremesinghe, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and 35 other candidates in Saturday’s election.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to him, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters at a daily news briefing in Beijing.
