African leaders at the General Assembly this week have been making their case for reform of the UN Security Council. Currently the Council – which is supposed to maintain global peace and security – has five permanent members – none of them from Africa. Just two weeks ago, the US announced it would support the creation of two permanent seats for African countries. But the push for a shake-up is far from certain to succeed.
We talked to Rama Yad, Director of the Atlantic Council’s Africa Center, about the demands for two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council for African states.
