STORYLINE:
Palestinian medical officials say Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have killed eight Palestinians, including five children, on Monday.
A mother and her four children, aged 4 to 8, were killed when a strike hit a home near the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
A girl and her parents were killed in another strike, on a school sheltering displaced people in central Gaza. The girl’s two siblings were wounded. Israel has struck several such schools-turned-shelters, saying militants hide out in them.
The casualties from both strikes were described in hospital records, and an Associated Press reporter saw the bodies.
Israel says it tries to avoid harming civilians but rarely comments on individual strikes.
Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war. It does not say how many were fighters. It says a little over half were women and children.
The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on October 7, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250. Around 100 of the captives are still being held in Gaza, and a third of them are believed to be dead.
