Critics point to the death toll and destruction in Gaza, and the precedent set by sporting bodies when they excluded Russian teams and athletes from a variety of major sporting events following the invasion of Ukraine. The success of controversial Israeli athlete Peter Paltchik at the Olympic Games in Paris served as an example of why some say Israel must be banned in the future. But Israel says the calls are misguided, and that some of those behind the demands are motivated by antisemitism rather than injustice.
