“China firmly opposes Japan’s unilateral action of starting the ocean discharge, and this position remains unchanged. China issuing a consensus with Japan aims to urge Japan to conscientiously fulfil its international legal obligations and shoulder the principal responsibility for safety supervision, make its best efforts to avoid a negative impact on the environment and human body, and effectively prevent potential risks of the ocean discharge. We hope that the international community, especially the stakeholder countries, will work with China to strictly supervise Japan’s fulfilling of its commitments.”

4. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“How to properly handle the nuclear-contaminated water of Fukushima is both a political issue and scientific issue. The bilateral consensus of China and Japan lays a foundation for the international community to handle the nuclear-contaminated water scientifically, effectively and safely, and is an initial joint achievement of the international community, especially the stakeholder countries. Going forward, China will work with the international community, especially the stakeholder countries, in continuation of the spirit of being highly responsible for the global maritime eco-environment and people’s health, to carry out dialogue with Japan with a scientific attitude and urge the Japanese side to properly handle concerns about the sea discharge.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“The agreement reached by China and Japan doesn’t mean that China will immediately and completely resume the import of Japanese aquatic products. China will continue to follow the WTO and Chinese laws and regulations, use scientific facts as the criterion, and ensure safety as the premise, and start adjusting relevant measures based on scientific evidence after effectively participating in relevant monitoring activities, conducting independent sampling and confirming results. We will carry out technological negotiations with the Japanese side and gradually resume the import of Japanese aquatic products that meet with standards under the prerequisite that China’s requirements are fully met. Results of relevant negotiations and policy adjustments will be announced to the public in a timely manner.”
