STORYLINE:
Venezuela’s Attorney General announced on Wednesday that he requested an arrest warrant for Argentine President Javier Milei and two of his closest collaborators.
Tarek William Saab said the move was in connection to the Boeing 747 cargo plane, which was help in Argentine territory before being transferred to the United States last February.
In a statement, William Saab indicated that a criminal investigation was opened “based on international law and the law that governs the country” and appointed two specialized prosecutors to process arrest warrants against Milei, his sister Karina, Secretary General of the Argentine Presidency, and the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich.
The plane was detained in June 2022 by Argentine police and U.S. officials made arrangements to take possession of it a few weeks later.
Argentina officially handed over custody of the plane to the U.S. on Feb. 11.
Relations between Argentina and Venezuela have been strained since the arrival to power in December of Milei, an ultra-liberal and extreme right-wing economist who has called Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro an “impoverishing socialist”.
