Yeah, I. It’s about. Yes, it’s. It’s – for me, it’s a lot to do with my dad and being born into a family with an alcoholic father and the challenges that come with that. The environmental challenge of being raised in that and not knowing it at the time, but of course, you know, getting out of home and becoming an adult and going – ‘Man, I have a lot of wiring that is just not great.’ And I can either, you know keep blaming where I’m from, or I can go, ‘Well, they did the best they knew how to do. And my job is to now maybe break that chain and do something different. But I never mentioned alcohol in in the song once because I didn’t want the song to be about that. It’s really about behavioral change that we all learn very quickly to survive in whatever environment that we’re in, and none of us chose it. You know, we get born into the family we are born into and here we are with this parent or parents or caretakers, whatever it is, even if you’re adopted, you didn’t choose that family. You just kind of – you land in it and you survive in it, and then you move out into the world and carry all these patterns out into the world, wondering why your life just seems to not be the one you want. And I had I had my own experience with that, you know, and it was my – it wasn’t my fault where I came from, but it was my responsibility to carry the good things that worked for me and then let go of the ones that didn’t. Like it says in the song: ‘I’ve taken the best and discarded the rest and started again.’ Now, I had no intention of writing this song. I didn’t – this wasn’t – this wasn’t something that was running around in my head, like needing to come out. And my dad’s been gone for a long time. But I am still working through my relationship with my dad all these years later. And obviously that song wanted to come out that day because I picked up a guitar and started playing a riff and this melody came and these words came and this whole thing was like a birth. It just came. I was shocked, I was shocked at it. You know, shocked that I was still processing this subject. But grateful that – that the recurring theme in the song was also that it’s never too late, never too late to change, break the chain and do things differently. You know."

STORYLINE:
The emotional heart of Keith Urban’s new album "High" is “Break the Chain,” a soulful rumination on dysfunctional family dynamics.
“It’s a lot to do with my dad and being born into a family with an alcoholic father and the challenges that come with that,” he says of the song. “My job is to now maybe break that chain and do something different. But I never mentioned alcohol in the song once because I didn’t want the song to be about that. It’s really about behavioral patterns that we all learn very quickly to survive in whatever environment that we’re in.”
Urban has been sober for nearly two decades.
"The recurring theme in the song was also that it’s never too late, never too late to change, break the chain and do things differently," Urban says.
