STORYLINE:
Ecuador carried out a scheduled power rationing for two to four hours between Wednesday night and early Thursday to perform maintenance work and alleviate its strained power generation system.
On Wednesday night, at ten in the capital Quito, some emblematic monuments, such as the Basilica del Voto Nacional, were left in darkness.
Some central avenues also remained dark for several hours in Quito, where, in certain areas, only the red and blue lights of police patrols could be seen.
According to authorities, Ecuador has an electricity supply deficit of around 1,100 megawatts caused by the early dry season and an acute drought in almost the entire territory.
In southern Ecuador, where the largest hydroelectric generation complex is located, it has not rained for more than 60 days, which has put the water reserves of the Mazar dam in a critical situation.
The country’s severe drought, the worst in more than six decades, has also created conditions for the spread of forest fires.
In recent weeks, the fire has already razed more than 31,000 hectares, almost half of which are located in the province of Loja, which borders Peru.
