STORYLINE:
Residents in northern Israel were not convinced Tuesday after the security cabinet decided that halting Hezbollah attacks is now a war goal.

They said they believed this should have been done a long time ago.

"I think that as soon as they decided to evacuate all the communities in the north, they should have put it in the goals of this war and as quickly as possible I think," Kiryat Shmona resident Toby Abutbul said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced earlier in the day that returning residents evacuated from Israel’s north due to cross-border fighting with Lebanon’s militant group Hezbollah is now an official war goal.

Hezbollah began striking Israel almost immediately after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war.

Since then, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire daily, coming close to a full-blown war on several occasions and forcing tens of thousands on both sides of the border to evacuate their homes.
