STORYLINE:
Some Palestinians in Gaza gathered at the Jordanian Field Hospital in Khan Younis Tuesday to receive their first prosthetic limb since the Israel-Hamas war began 11 months ago in what Amman called the “Restoring Hope” initiative.

The Jordan Armed Forces on Monday said in a statement that it sent two mobile clinics into the Gaza Strip to provide prosthetic legs to those who had had their limbs amputated due to severe injuries caused by Israel’s war with Hamas.

The Associated Press documented Jordanian doctor Abdullah al-Hemaida, a prosthetics specialist from the Royal Medical Services, tightly installing a prosthetic left leg for Rezk Tafesh, a 30-year-old man from Gaza city, who was injured in June 21 during Israeli military operations in Rafah.

"I had lost all hope that I would ever be able to walk again on my own two feet. Thank God, today I had a limb fitted and I can practice my work again." he said.

After fitting, a team of Jordanian health workers helped patients take their first steps.

Al-Hemaida said that the health team could work on 5 to 10 cases at a time as it only takes a short time to install a new limb.

"What distinguishes these limbs is that they are quick-fitting limbs. Within one to two hours of work, the patient will have the limb fitted and ready," he said.

The Jordanian initiative aims to provide and install lower and upper prosthetic limbs for around 14,000 amputees.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack triggered the Israel-Hamas war nearly a year ago.

The ministry does not differentiate between fighters and civilians in its count but says a little over half of those killed were women and children. Israel says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.

The war has caused vast destruction and displaced about 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million.
