STORYLINE:
The man accused of an apparent attempt to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course wrote a book last year urging Iran to kill the former president. In his apparently self-published book, “Ukraine’s Unwinnable War,” Ryan Wesley Routh described Trump as a “buffoon” for both the 2021 Capitol riot and backing out of the Iran nuclear deal. Routh, who was charged on Monday, once visited Ukraine and his online footprint showed that he tried to recruit fighters for Kyiv. It also outlined his shifting politics, noting he once voted for Trump before siding against him.

According to court documents filed Monday, Routh camped outside a Florida golf course with food and a rifle for nearly 12 hours. The papers indicated that the suspect was lying in wait for the former president before a Secret Service agent thwarted the potential attack and opened fire. Officials said Ryan Wesley Routh did not fire any shots, never had Trump in his line of sight and sped away after being shot at by an agent who spotted him. He was arrested in a neighboring county. The 58-year-old Routh appeared in federal court in West Palm Beach to face federal firearms charges.

A neighbor of Routh’s in Kaawa, Hawaii says he doesn’t know much about the suspect. Loren Pelkey commented that Routh’s "wife was really nice," and that he built miniature homes for people.
