"This is a type of giant pumpkin, bred using the most classic selection – you select the most giant pumpkins, cross them with the most giant pumpkins, and as a result, the pumpkins become even bigger and bigger. Then also, the correct agricultural technology (is required), which involves correct formation, correct watering, correct fertilizing, and planting time. In general, there are many nuances about which it is not possible to tell in a couple of minutes, unfortunately."

"Every year for the last 10-15 years this record has been steadily increasing. Last year was not very successful, and no matter how hard the pumpkin growers tried, the maximum was 771 kilograms. One of today’s pumpkins was randomly exactly the same size, but one was larger – 818 (kilograms), and this is an absolute Russian record of all time."

15. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Artyom Parshin, exhibition curator, landscape architect, Moscow State University Botanical Garden ‘Apothecary Garden’:
"It should be said that each of these pumpkins has a pedigree. Not only do we know their mothers and fathers, but also their grandfathers and grandmothers, and even seven generations back. Because it is like in purebred animals, the bloodline is very important. That is, in this case, the flower is pollinated by the pollen of some famous pedigree plant, thus, the chance of getting a heavier pumpkin increases."

17. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Artyom Parshin, exhibition curator, landscape architect, Moscow State University Botanical Garden ‘Apothecary Garden’:
"Sometimes (gardeners) put up an umbrella so the pumpkin doesn’t get too hot from the direct sun. Sometimes (gardeners) put up some kind of canopy so that it doesn’t get wet in a long rain, sometimes you need to water it, and sometimes you need to cover all the plants with a polyethene tunnel on a cold night. So it’s like a small child. But in the end, it turns out to be very big."
