"They tell us ‘don’t have missiles!’ OK, (let’s assume) we don’t have missiles. Go disarm Israel then. (It doesn’t make sense that) we don’t have missiles, and it (Israel) can throw bombs on us whenever it wants, and we are told to shut up if we talk."

9. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian President:
"They (Americans) have sanctioned us. They have set up (military) bases. They threaten us. If they don’t do such things, we can even be brothers with them. We have no business with them."

11. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian President:
"We are not after nuclear weapons. We are not. But we don’t accept to be bullied. We won’t accept a heavily-armed Israel in front of us. They (the West) will use it like the monster under the bed to threaten us and say it will attack. It can’t do that, we will hit back too."
12. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian President:
"We should meet our scientific and technical needs (for enriched uranium.) We are not after nuclear weapons. We were committed to the framework written in the JCPOA. We are still seeking to keep that framework. They tore apart (the agreement), they forced us to do things that we shouldn’t be doing. If they don’t continue (that behavior), we won’t continue either. We want to sit down and talk to them within the framework of the IAEA and our mutual agreement, so that we can do our job and they can do theirs."

14. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Masoud Pezeshkian, Iranian President:
"First, they (Americans) shouldn’t tear apart the agreements that we put on paper, then we will talk to them. We don’t want to fight. But they have blocked all paths for us."

STORYLINE:
Iran’s new reformist president insisted Monday that Tehran didn’t want to enrich uranium at near-weapons grade levels but had been forced to by the U.S. withdrawal from its nuclear deal with world powers.
The comments by President Masoud Pezeshkian, in response to a question by The Associated Press at his first news conference, underlines a campaign promise he made to try to see international sanctions on the Islamic Republic lifted.
However, it remains unclear just how much room for negotiation Pezeshkian will have — and just who will be in the White House come next year.
“I think, we said many times, we don’t want to do this at all. We want to solve our technical and scientific needs, we are not looking for nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian said.
“We adhered to the framework written in the (nuclear deal). We are still looking to maintain those frameworks. They tore them, they forced us to do something.”
He added: “If they don’t continue, we will not continue.”
