Germany introduced tighter controls on its borders this week in a move to curb migration and cross-border crime. Passport controls have been extended to all of Germany’s borders since Monday. The move has drawn protest from neighboring countries over the threat to freedom of movement and also the push-back of irregular migrants denied entry to Germany. The changes come as the debate over asylum seekers and irregular migrants becomes increasingly fractious in Germany and across Europe. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has criticized what he calls the ‘heated nature’ of Europe’s immigration debate.
