“I’m a bit sad. It’s three years less of playing time. I have originally planned to travel around after retirement. But it’s fine. For women the retirement age is 58 years old, which is a bit better than what I had expected. It’s a sense of relief along with sadness.”

“For sure there’s impact (on myself). But I think we should look at this positively. It’s a good thing because our country has entered an aging society, and there’s severe aging. A multi-level pension security system is being built, so raising the retirement age is the country weighing up (the pros and cons). It’s a strategy that’s beneficial to the entire country, nation and society.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Ms. Zhao, 56, retired Beijing resident: (Full name not given)
“I think it varies from person to person. It depends on the position and level of job. For people who will have high retirement salary and are in good health, they certainly are willing to work for a few more years, right? For people who have low income, don’t have very good health conditions, and have to handle family issues, they must be willing to retire early and receive a regular salary each month.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mr. Bai, 26, piano technician: (Full name not given)
“The society is developing and making progress, I think China will be different by that time. Policies change every year, there’s no need to be too anxious. For young people, it’s too tiring to think too much when they are still in their 20s. It’s already tiring to deal with daily life, why should I think so much?”

STORYLINE:
Beijing residents had mixed reactions after China announced Friday to raise its retirement age, which is now among the youngest in the world’s major economies, in an effort to address its shrinking population and aging work force.

The policy change will be carried out over 15 years, with the retirement age for men raised to 63 years, and for women to 55 or 58 years depending on their jobs.

The current retirement age is 60 for men and 50 for women in blue-collar jobs and 55 for women doing white-collar work.

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, the country’s legislature, passed the new policy Friday after a sudden announcement earlier in the week that it was reviewing the measure, state broadcaster CCTV announced.

“I’m a bit sad. It’s three years less of playing time. I have originally planned to travel around after retirement. But it’s fine. For women the retirement age is 58 years old, which is a bit better that what I had expected. It’s a sense of relief along with sadness,” said 35-year-old Li Bin, who works in the marketing event planning industry. She said since she will have to work for three more years, she will work out more to maintain good health in order to carry out her post-retirement travel plan.

Fifty-two-year-old finance worker Mr. Lu will see an almost two-year delay in his retirement, but he is supportive of the policy and says he’s happy to make more contributions when he still can.

Another Beijing resident Ms. Zhao retired six years ago and said the new policy would have a different impact on different groups.
