"It is rare that we choose to do scary things, as we get older, I think it’s much easier just to keep the status quo. But I have decided to make my Broadway debut at 51 years old. In an institution like ‘Chicago,’ the longest running Broadway show ever. And it’s all the things you would think it is. It’s exhilarating and thrilling and scary and daunting. And, you know, in a one hour period at rehearsal, I feel all of those things. But also just really grateful because it has been an incredible experience.

"Even though Roxie is so established, it’s still an evolution. She’s still someone that actors are given the opportunity to discover for themselves, which is different than a lot of shows. A lot of shows you know, they want you in the same wigs that the other actor wore or to play it the same way or to have a certain quality in your voice. And. And. ‘Chicago’ is really about finding yourself in these characters. So the process has been for me trying to tap into what I relate the most to, but also like understanding that this is an evolution. And because who Roxie is today, that might change in two weeks because I’ll be on stage and something else will hit me or I’ll discover something else. And that’s the beauty of theater, but also really the beauty of ‘Chicago.’"

"I think that the message is that the media creates celebrities using angles that uplifts people that sometimes don’t deserve to be uplifted. I think that’s very timely for right now. But also how the alliance between Roxie and Velma and how they don’t think they need each other, but they need each other. And the way that they achieve success is with each other stronger together, which I also think is a very important feminist message."
STORYLINE:
Alyssa Milano says she wanted to challenge herself by taking on her first Broadway role, and chose an iconic one. On September 16th, Milano will take the stage in “Chicago,” playing Roxie Hart, a disgruntled housewife and aspiring performer accused of murder.
It’s been decades since the star of TV hits like “Who’s the Boss” and “Charmed,” has performed regularly onstage. She says she started out as a child actor playing parts in local and regional theater before getting her big break in TV. While it’s rare as she ages to have the opportunity to try new, scary things, Milano says she was up for the task.
“I have decided to make my Broadway debut at 51 years old in an institution like ‘Chicago,’ the longest running Broadway show ever. And it’s all the things you would think it is. It’s exhilarating and thrilling and scary and daunting,” Milano told the AP in a recent interview. “In a one-hour period at rehearsal, I feel all of those things, but also just really grateful because it has been an incredible experience.”
Roxie has been played by many actors over the years including Pamela Anderson, Melanie Griffith, Brandy, Christie Brinkley, Mel B, Marilu Henner, Brooke Shields, Sofia Vergara, Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking. Milano says the beauty of the character is her complexity, allowing each actor to make the role their own.
