"He went to the front consciously. It wasn’t the case that he was caught, dragged into a minibus, and thrown to the front. He went willingly, as a person who wanted to defend his country. STORYLINE:
A memorial service was held in Kyiv on Thursday for the adopted son of Ukraine’s chief rabbi, Moshe Azman, who was killed in battle.
Anton Samborskyi, 32, was reported missing in late July and his death was confirmed following weeks of uncertainty.
The service took place at the Central Synagogue of Kyiv, followed by his burial at the city’s Jewish cemetery.
Rabbi Azman, who adopted Samborskyi as a 10-year-old orphan, shared his grief publicly, referring to his son by his chosen Jewish name, Matityahu or “Moty.”
In a recent post online, Azman wrote: “In May of this year, he had a daughter. But a week after the baby was born, Moty was drafted into the army … The last time we talked to Moty was on July 17. On July 24, he went missing during a battle.”
Ukraine has a centuries-old Jewish heritage, with its communities playing a significant role in the country’s cultural and religious history, despite periods of persecution.
Its population was decimated during the Holocaust in World War II.
