"Unfortunately, this has been a very painful and difficult morning for the people of Israel, state of Israel, where we have lost dear sons of ours who have fallen in battle in terror attacks leaving behind families, whose worlds were shattered. I condemn fiercely the horrific criminal terror attack this morning and express my sorrow and pain that it has inflicted and my heart also goes out to the fighters who were killed last night in a helicopter crash in Gaza and I wish those wounded a full and swift recovery. Unfortunately, Israel is in battle, is fighting, and we – the international community and the free world – we should all stand up together fiercely against terror of all kind.”

His mother is here, Idit, we agreed that we invite you to a photo opp with us Idit, with a picture of your son. I also discussed with several people, my friends from the Arab world, I talked to them, I asked them to speak to those who are holding him as a hostage, to ask them that this is a plea from the Republic of Serbia and plea from all of us, that Alon Ohel is allowed to return home.”

STORYLINE:
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog said Wednesday that “this has been a very painful and difficult morning for the people of Israel” because of an attack in Israeli-occupied West Bank and a helicopter crash in Gaza.
Speaking in Serbia’s capital, Belgrade, Herzog described Wednesday’s attack as a “horrific, criminal terror attack” and expressed “sorrow for the pain it has inflicted.”
He did not elaborate but was apparently referring to an incident when a fuel tanker crashed into a West Bank bus stop, seriously injuring one person. Israeli officials said it was an attack.
The Israeli military said the driver was “neutralized” at the scene. It did not immediately identify the driver or provide evidence that the crash was an attack.
Violence in the West Bank has escalated since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack ignited the war in Gaza.
The Israeli military has said that two Israeli soldiers died and seven were injured when their helicopter crashed in the southern Gaza Strip.
