1. SOUNDBITE (English) Tatishe Nteta, political scientist, UMass Amherst:
"This is not an event which is going to adversely affect the sort of core supporters of Donald Trump. This is not a debate which is going to positively affect the core supporters of Kamala Harris. These are people that were going to vote for these candidates one way or the other. Given the increasing polarization in the nation, most people have already made up their minds and the debate is not going to push them one way or the other. You know, we’re always looking to that undecided voter. The undecided voter — the population of the undecided voter is shrinking. And it shrinks with each day. Most people are going to make up their minds before Election Day and what’s really going to matter is going to be the on-the-ground mobilization of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, in what is likely going to be an extremely close election. And you know, the person who is — the party and the candidate that is able to, you know, to garner and to mobilize the most voters is going to win in November."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Tatishe Nteta, political scientist, UMass Amherst:
"The consistency in the challenging of who Donald Trump is, his policies and his viewpoints as well as his personality that Harris undertook is something that Democrats have been waiting for for a long time. Hillary Clinton never pushed Donald Trump in the ways that Harris did last night. Joe Biden did not do that. This is one of the first Democrats that called Donald Trump out on a number of his personal characteristics, his policies and legacy, and his overarching personality. And so I think again, I think we may see an increase in excitement and enthusiasm for the Harris campaign because this is something that Democrats have been longing for really since Donald Trump jumped into the political scene."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Tatishe Nteta, political scientist, UMass Amherst:
"I think this is one of those instances as, you know, an educator, you see someone who was prepared and someone who was not. This is what preparation does, it leads to success on game day. And looking at that debate, one candidate was prepared, one candidate knew what they needed to do, engaged in a strategy and set of tactics and left as the perceived winner and the other candidate is in some cases reeling. And today, I think the Harris campaign is, is disseminating widely all of those various sound bites, all of those highlights. And the Trump campaign is looking to turn the page."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tatishe Nteta, political scientist, UMass Amherst:
"You know, I’ll start with Harris. I think she needed to demonstrate to a very large television audience that she is ready and able to inhabit the presidency. So, you know, as a woman, as a person of color, there is implicit and explicit bias that people have regarding her suitability for the office. And one of the things that needs to be communicated again is that this is a person who is experienced, who is ready and who is able to inhabit that office. And I think that she did that effectively."
