"It is certainly of great value for our family. This is an important moment in our lives, because this is a story that we did not fully know about and it came to light. We not only learned about it, but we were also able to honor the memory of our great-grandmother here."
4. Wide of belongings being returned by the Arolsen Archives
5. Close of gold tooth belonging to Jozefa Skorko
6. Close of ring belonging to Skorko’s sister, Zofia Strusinska
7. Items belonging to sisters on display
8. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Adam Wierzbicki, great-grandson of Zofia Strusinska:
"I must admit that at first I honestly thought it was some sort of scam. But after having talked to the volunteer and then to Ms. Magdalena from the foundation, these doubts were dispelled. I also did my own research on the internet, that this is a very serious foundation, not some fly-by-night company, so all my fears were dispelled."
9. Various of Wierzbicki looking at belongings of Skorko and Strusinska
10. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Adam Wierzbicki, great-grandson of Zofia Strusinska:
"And the feeling itself was so, so uplifting. Maybe it’s not quite the right word, although it is a bit like that. However, I think that this awareness that history will catch up with you anyway, yes. In this case, well, a tragic one, but it will also catch up in such a way, well, in such a way that I will remember it, and that we will all remember it and that it is worth remembering it in this way. As if my aunts were looking down on me from the past."
11. Various of belongings on display that are being returned to families
12. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Manuela Golc, Volunteer at the Arolsen Archives:
"If we find the grave of such a person – we work as volunteers in all of Poland – and we look for a specific person in a given town who will go to the cemetery and leave a note asking the family to contact us, that we have a memento and that we would simply like to give it to the family."
13. Close of gold ring
14. Woman looking at gold ring
15. SOUNDBITE (Polish) Manuela Golc, Volunteer at the Arolsen Archives:
"I also experience it very emotionally with each family and I am also aware that we are looking for people who have already passed away, who are not among us anymore. And it is often the case that we pass on information that the family was not aware of at all. So this conversation on the phone, because these are usually phone conversations, is also very difficult. But at the very end, we are very happy that the memento is returning to the family."
16. Various of ceremony with items on display
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Floriane Azoulay, Director of the Arolsen Archives:
"We are very lucky to return belongings to 11 families. Each of them was connected to the Warsaw Uprising. So we are talking here about former inmates who were very brave people, who had to pay a very high price for resistance because they wanted to live free and because they wanted the city to be free. So this object is the last witness of their humanity, of their uniqueness. Everything that the Nazis wanted to destroy. So this is very special to say this is there and this is what makes families today so unique."
18. Stolen Memory brochure with personal belongings in the background
