"Pope Francis arrives Wednesday in Asia’s financial hub, Singapore, for the last leg of a four-nation tour. He had earlier visited Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor. He will be the second pope to visit Singapore in 38 years, since a brief stopover by the late John Paul II in 1986. During his three-day visit, Pope Francis is expected to bring a message of hope and unity to one of the world’s richest nations and one that’s religiously diversified. The highlight will be a public mass on Thursday at the national stadium with some 40-thousand faithful’s – including those from neighboring Malaysia and Brunei. Pope Francis will also meet government officials, visit the sick and elderly at a nursing home, and hold an interreligious dialogue with youth.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis’ visit to Singapore on Wednesday, where three-quarters of the population is ethnically Chinese and Mandarin is an official language, will give him yet another opportunity to reach out to Beijing as the Vatican seeks improved ties for the sake of China’s estimated 12 million Catholics.

Singapore is the last leg of his longest, farthest and most challenging trip to Asia after having visited Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor.

The trip comes a month before the Vatican is set to renew a landmark 2018 agreement governing the nomination of bishops.

But by arriving in Singapore, a regional economic powerhouse which maintains good relations with both China and the United States, Francis is also stepping into a protracted maritime dispute as China has grown increasingly assertive with its presence in the South China Sea.
