STORYLINE:
Pope Francis attended Mass on Tuesday at a coastal park in East Timor with six hundred thousand people present, including the country’s Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao who led the crowds in chants.
The coastal park in which the Mass took place holds historical significance for the country as its where Indonesian forces buried dead Timorese independence fighters.
Crowds sporting umbrellas with the Vatican flag sang hymns and even carried signs asking for blessing and forgiveness for their sins.
People gathered in the area as early as 1 a.m. to catch a glimpse of the Pope many braving the sun for hours in temperatures as high as 32 degrees Celsius.
The pope’s stop in East Timor is part o fa 12-day, four-country tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
East Timor is likely the most Catholic country in the world, with the Vatican saying about 96% of Timorese follow the faith.
