"We heard the news like every other Jordanian. We heard it on TV. I did not expect him to be in that area. So the news spread and then we learned that Maher had carried out an operation, killed three Israeli soldiers and was martyred."

"He offered himself as a martyr in defense of Palestine and the Arab and Islamic nations. What we see happening in the West Bank and in Gaza, that pushed (him) toward martyrdom, God willing. It pushed him to this. And he took his pistol and carried out the martyrdom operation."

"Maher served in the army for 20 years, and retired as first lieutenant. Throughout his military service, he was not subjected to any trials or anything. He was religiously committed. After his retirement, he spent around a year or six months then obtained a driver’s license. After that, he submitted a job application to that (transportation) company. And he started working in the company, transporting to the crossing (border)."

STORYLINE:
The father of the gunman in the deadly shooting of three Israelis at the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan, said on Monday he was proud of his son.
Three Israelis were shot and killed Sunday at the border crossing, Israeli officials said, in what appeared to be an attack linked to the 11-month-old war in Gaza.
Relatives identified the gunman as Maher al-Jazi, a retired Jordanian soldier from Athroh, a town in the impoverished Maan area.
Thiab Al-Jazi described his son Maher as a "hero" and a cub, likening himself to a lion.
Thiab said his son left behind four daughters and two sons, the eldest of whom is 14 years old.
Israel’s military said the gunman approached the Allenby Bridge Crossing from the Jordanian side in a truck and opened fire at Israeli security forces, who killed him in a shootout.
Thiab sat with his sons and received condolences in the village of Al-Hussainiya in Maan on Monday as mourners came to pay respects.
