STORYLINE:
Dozens of victims and relatives of victims paid tribute on Saturday to the dead, tortured, and disappeared by the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) in Chile.
In the somber Colonia Dignidad, one of the main clandestine detention centers of the military regime, they remembered the hundreds of political prisoners whose remains were never found.
During the ceremony, the group demanded justice and the investigation of the whereabouts of hundreds of forced detainees.
With flowers, songs, and poems, relatives paid tribute at various points of the former colony – a sect founded by former Nazi Corporal Paul Schaefer in 1961 and marked by the torture and enslavement of 300 people.
After the military coup, the place also became a clandestine detention and torture center for opponents of the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
Judicial investigations under the National Search Plan, launched earlier this year to locate and identify the forcibly disappeared, uncovered several clandestine graves to bury the bodies of the detainees who perished there.
Every year, friends, relatives, and comrades of those who disappeared return to Colonia Dignidad to remember their dead.
This year, the tributes have taken on special significance following the announcement last June by Chilean President Gabriel Boric that he will carry out the expropriation of part of the land of the former colony – now renamed Villa Baviera that covers some 14,000 hectares.
