STORYLINE:
Thousands of people paid tribute on Sunday to those killed, tortured and disappeared during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in Chile.
The events that included street demonstrations and peaceful marches were part of the commemorations of the 51st anniversary of the coup d’état of September 11, 1973, in which the government of Salvador Allende was overthrown.
At one point, a group of street demonstrators hurled rocks at police vehicles and water cannons and tear gas was directed at some protesters.
Manuel Monsalve, undersecretary of the interior, said around 3-thousand people participated in the pilgrimage, which began its journey in the Los Héroes sector, passing by the presidential palace, heading to the General Cemetery.
"I think this is an abominable story, as the song says. It is not over yet and there is still a long way to go," said Carolina Díaz Carrasco, a protester who took flowers to her mother who was killed during the dictatorship.
"The civil cases, imprisoning the guilty, has been a long, hard, painful and very difficult process, with a lot of struggle," she said.
Official figures show that the military dictatorship (1973-1990) killed 3,095 opponents, while the estimated number of missing people is around 1,300.
