3. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Costner, writer/director/producer:
"I mean, sometimes when things don’t come to us easily, we want to just step away. There’s something in me that it only increases my desire when something is not working. Especially when I in my own mind, I’ve satisfied myself that it’s a story, it’s a piece of entertainment that I think can stand the test of time. And so when. When I feel rejection, I’m like anybody else. But when I open my eyes from my disappointment, my desire has only increased. So that’s how I’ve driven myself. ‘Horizon’ is not a message to my country. It’s a reminder to my country of how difficult it was that people made this journey. Again it was not a land in Disneyland."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Costner, writer/director/producer:
"The West periodically, I want to step back to it because I feel the drama that exists when there’s no law. I feel the drama that exists when there’s confusion in language and people. The land is in dispute and and there’s no law. Imagine no law in Venice, and the gondolas have their own way of dealing with things. But have you. No, it just sets up for reality. And the thing about Westerns is I reject most Westerns because they – early in my life, – they didn’t seem real. The people didn’t look authentic. There was nothing at stake. It was just a movie headed for a gunfight."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Costner, writer/director/producer:
"Well, I think that violence is vulgar. And it is not (unclear). It’s ugly. It is unstructured and it’s sometimes sudden. And I think that’s authentic. I think extended fights, when no one is feeling the pain, those might be exciting, but they never caught my attention. When you see absolute violence, it’s terrifying. It can make you sick. And, it’s not pretty. And so you know, I don’t have to go very far to say like that doesn’t seem authentic to me. It seems like this is this is vicious and it’s to the end. And God forbid that any of us ever watch a life taken in front of us. And if we do, we will never be the same."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Costner, writer/director/producer – on not relying on special effects for the film:
"Two things. One, I don’t hear very good. I play rock and roll. That’s why I’m going to keep these on a little bit. Maybe I look goofy, I don’t know. And the other thing is, I also don’t know how to do special effects very well. I just know how to film horses and fires and fighting and and things like that. I think I can film love and stuff, but I don’t know how to make ships fly and I don’t know how to make stuff like that. So my movies are almost always going to be a little simpler."
