"AI brings a fantastic and amazing user experience, changes our daily life. But to be frank, AI also brings some risk, some trouble for users. So you know the Honor strategy is human centric. So we use AI to enable and empower people when deepfakes are changing people’s face and generating some fraud."

"What we’re really going to see is a constant battle where companies that are investing in this AI image detection and deepfake prevention, they will discover some things that allow them to be really effective. And then those bad actors, perhaps, who are creating the deepfakes and doing these attacks of whatever kind, they’ll discover some things that then give them the benefit. And it’s going to be this constant seesaw effect. For now, it seems like the direction is heading in the favour of the deepfake prevention methods, because I think that’s newer than deepfakes, and it’s where a lot of the energy and investment is going at the minute."

Chinese tech company Honor has developed technology that can detect so-called deepfake videos.

It’s the latest brand to do battle with scammers who are trying to exploit AI to trick people with fake images.

How do you know the person you’re on a video call with is really who you think they are?

AI technology has become so sophisticated that it’s possible for change a person’s face and obscure their true identity.

AI tools have been used to create fake images of prominent political candidates that aim to reinforce particular narratives – from Vice President Kamala Harris in a communist uniform to former President Donald Trump in handcuffs.

And fraudsters used a deepfake scam to trick an employee of engineering firm Arup into transferring $25 million to them.

So Chinese tech company Honor is the latest firm to try and combat the problem.

It has developed a feature that can detect whether a face in a video may have been manipulated.

"AI brings a fantastic and amazing user experience, changes our daily life. But to be frank, AI also brings some risk,” says George Zhao, CEO of Honor.

“So we use AI to enable and empower people when deepfakes are changing people’s face and generating some fraud."

This is an on-device feature, meaning users won’t have to connect to the cloud to use it.

Honor is not the first company to enter this battle.
