"Georgia’s gun laws are permissive and they have been getting looser. For example, you no longer have to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon in the state, and Georgia does not have a red flag law despite questions about whether law enforcement’s contact with the shooter should have indicated that they should have taken some action, like taking guns away."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Amy, The Associated Press:
"However, because the alleged shooter is 14-years-old, he would not have been able to buy an assault rifle on his own. So someone else must have obtained it for him, or he must have gotten it from someone else."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Amy, The Associated Press:
"Because this is a Republican majority state, most Republicans are hostile to traditional forms of gun control. And so those who have wanted to see changes in past years have begun to focus on what they call safe storage. The idea is that the state would give a tax incentive for you to buy a gun lock or a gun safe, or to take a safety course. And there were bills that proposed to do that that were pending in the legislature this year, and they did move forward some, but none of those bills were passed into law."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Amy, The Associated Press:
"A committee met Thursday to try to discuss ways forward on safe storage. That meeting was already scheduled before what happened here at the high school. But there are real issues on whether Republicans and Democrats can agree on an approach to reach some sort of compromise."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Amy, The Associated Press:
"Georgia has spent a lot of money on school safety. The state has given out more than $180 million in one-time grants, and starting on July 1st of this year, Georgia began including more than $100 million a year in ongoing funding in its school funding formula for school districts to spend on school safety. The idea is that every district will get $45,000 for each of their schools. The governor and other people have said that they want the districts to use that money to hire school resource officers, armed officers who will be present to ensure security in schools. But it’s up to the districts, ultimately, as to how they spend that money."

STORYLINE:
The teen charged with opening fire at a Georgia high school denied threatening to carry out a school shooting when authorities interviewed him last year about a menacing post on the social media site Discord, according to a sheriff’s report obtained Thursday.

Conflicting evidence on the post’s origin left investigators unable to arrest anyone, the report said. Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said she reviewed the report from May 2023 and found nothing that would have justified bringing charges at the time.

The 14-year-old suspect has been charged as an adult with murder in the shootings Wednesday at Apalachee High School outside Atlanta that killed four people and wounded nine.
