"35 years ago, when I was elected as an MP for the first time, there were many scandals such as the Recruit Cosmos shares-for-influence scandal and the trust people had in the LDP was extremely low. I think it is even worse now. That’s one (reason)."

STORYLINE:
Japan’s former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba explained Friday why he would run in the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership race, the winner of which will become Japan’s next prime minister.

"This is my fifth time running. I see this is my last opportunity and I will do all I can." the 67-year-old told the media.

The internal election must be held by the end of September, which marks the end of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s three-year term and will only include the party’s parliamentarians and its 1.1 million due-paying members.

The winner will be the head of the party and the country’s prime minister as the party and its smaller coalition partner control Japan’s two-chamber parliament.
