STORYLINE:
Officials in East Timor say they are all ready to receive the Pope, who is expected to draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands when he visits the tiny Catholic country next week as part of a trip around the region.

East Timor’s President Ramos Horta inaugurated a newly constructed banquet hall and presidential palace where he will receive the Pope, that was built with the help of the Chinese government.

Australia is providing water tanks and has dispatched a special medical plane to be based in the capital, Dili, in case of an emergency.

But amid the ecstatic crowds, Frances will have to confront the legacy of a clerical sexual abuse scandal in the country.

Revered independence hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner Bishop Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo was secretly sanctioned by the Vatican in 2020 for sexually abusing young boys.

There is no word on whether Francis will refer to Belo, who is still revered in East Timor but has been barred by the Vatican from ever returning.
