"Rehearsing these kinds of combined joint forcible entry operations, with an amphibious landing and following operations ashore is very important because of how complex they are. The defense of the Korean peninsula depends on our rock and U.S. forces continuously working together, shoulder to shoulder, including in this future Ssangyong Exercises."

STORYLINE:
South Korea and the United States held joint amphibious landing drills on Monday in South Korea’s southeastern port city of Pohang.

The drills took place as part of the ongoing Exercise Ssangyong, which is jointly conducted by South Korean and U.S. Navy and Marine Corps through September 7 along the east coast and around the Pohang area.

The exercise is designed to strengthen the alliance’s combat readiness and improve interoperability.

U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Gabriel Tiggs explained the importance of the drills.

This year’s Ssangyong Exercise involves division-level Marine Corps landing forces, the South Korean Navy’s large transport ships, the U.S. amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, and more than 40 ships.

Dozens of South Korean and U.S. Air Forces’ aircraft and South Korean amphibious assault vehicles also participate in the training.
