Serbian riot police using batons were backed up by armoured vehicles on Tuesday (30/12) when they broke up a protest march by several thousand ethnic Albanian students in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. The protesters gathered briefly near the town’s main square and read from a text of student demands before police moved in to disperse them.
The students were demanding that Belgrade re-open Albanian-language schools which were closed down seven years ago when Serbia took control of the previously autonomous province.
