"Members of the jury, I have received a note from you and I’ll specifically address Madam Foreperson. The note says ‘after additional time, with thoughtful deliberation, we are still unable to come to a unanimous decision on any charges.’ Madam foreperson, is that accurate?"
Jury Foreperson: "Yes."
Judge Daniel I. St. Hilaire: "So say you all, jurors?"
Jurors: "Yes. Yes, Your Honor."
Judge Daniel I. St. Hilaire: "All right. Well, at this time, I’ve already asked you to further deliberate. Looks like nothing will happen if I continue to ask you to continue to deliberate. So I’m going to be declaring or I am declaring a mistrial for all these charges. Members of the jury, I am going to dismiss you from this case. I thank you for your service."

STORYLINE:
A New Hampshire judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a former staffer at a youth detention center charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Tuesday’s ruling came after the jury said it was deadlocked in the first criminal trial linked to a sprawling child abuse scandal.

Sixty-two-year-old Victor Malavet was one of nine men charged in the 5-year-old investigation into abuse allegations at the Sununu Youth Services Center.

He worked at a separate state-run facility and was charged with 12 counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault.

Natasha Maunsell testified that Malavet frequently arranged to be alone with her in a candy storage room, the laundry room and other locations and repeatedly raped her.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they’ve been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly as Maunsell has done.
