STORYLINE:
Pope Francis arrived at the nunciature – the papal diplomatic mission – in Jakarta on Tuesday, where he will be staying during his visit to Indonesia.
The trip is the longest of his pontificate, aiming to encourage the Southeast Asian nation’s Catholic community and celebrate the tradition of interfaith harmony in a country with the world’s largest Muslim population.
Francis waved from his car window to crowds waiting on the roadside during his motorcade through the Indonesian capital.
“When I saw him in the car I was so touched, I got goosebumps,” said Fanfan, a 49-year-old housewife from West Jakarta. “I still hope he will appear in front of me to wave his hand again.”
Francis’ first full day of activities begins Wednesday with visits to the country’s political leaders and meetings with Indonesian clergy who are helping to fuel the growth of the Catholic Church in Asia.
