STORYLINE:
Ukrainian firefighters freed trapped civilians and put out blazes after Kharkiv was hit by Russian strikes on Sunday.
41 people were injured, including 5 children, two medics and two rescuers, according to Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov.
Syniehubov said a shopping center, a sports facility and residential buildings were among those damaged in Sunday’s attack.
On Saturday 2 people were killed by Russian shelling in the Kharkiv region, according to Syniehubov.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it had captured the town of Pivnichne, also in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
Russian forces have been driving deeper into the partly occupied eastern region, the total capture of which is one of the Kremlin’s primary ambitions.
